Tetouan from Tangier: getting there, UNESCO medina and a plan

Tetouan, the "white dove", is about 60 km from Tangier — roughly an hour by road. Its medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. The times and prices below are indicative (as of October 2026), from guides and forums — sources sometimes differ, so confirm on the spot.

Getting there from Tangier

Option Time Indicative price
Bus (CTM, Supratours) approx. 1 h 15 approx. 30–50 MAD depending on source
Shared grand taxi approx. 1 h approx. 35–50 MAD per seat
Whole grand taxi approx. 1 h approx. 250–350 MAD (agree before getting in)
Car with driver approx. 1 h per vehicle

What to see

  • The medina: UNESCO-listed with Andalusian influence; entry is free. Allow half a day on foot. A licensed guide costs roughly 100–300 MAD for a two-to-three-hour tour.
  • The Archaeological Museum: near Bab el-Okla, known for its mosaics. Entry is quoted around 10 MAD, but sources disagree on the price and closing day — check on arrival.
  • Dar Sanaa (crafts school): founded in 1919, you can watch zellige, embroidery and woodwork being made; entry is about 10–20 MAD depending on the source.
  • The mellah: the former Jewish quarter in the north-east corner of the medina, free to explore.
  • The Ensanche: the Spanish quarter with wide boulevards and European façades around Place Moulay El Mehdi. Spanish is still common here, especially with older shopkeepers.
  • Martil: a beach about ten kilometres away, easily reached by petit taxi.

A half-day plan

  1. Morning: medina, souks and mellah.
  2. Lunch: around the Ensanche.
  3. Early afternoon: Archaeological Museum and Dar Sanaa, both near Bab el-Okla.
  4. Return: taxi or bus before evening.

Tips

  • Keep small change in dirhams.
  • For a grand taxi agree the fare before setting off (see our guide Taxis in Tangier).
  • Combined with Chefchaouen, Tetouan makes a lovely day; see our guide One day in Chefchaouen.
